Development and delivery of a training programme on health economics and utility data generation

The challenge

Our client had specialist teams within the company who focused on health economics, however their wider market access, medical affairs and country teams were not all familiar with different aspects of health economics or utility data. There was therefore a need to improve their engagement with these materials and ability to communicate these to key stakeholders.

The solution

Understanding that the audience came from a nontechnical background, we designed a half day training programme which encompassed:

> What utilities are – explaining the concept, why these data are important, and how these data are utilised
> How utilities are measured – both direct and indirect methods of measurement
> Mapping from other PROs to utilities – overview of approach and the benefits or challenges of this approach
> Generic versus condition-specific measures – the benefits and challenges of each, and when to consider different measures if designing clinical studies.

These topics were all covered through presentations and interactive exercises to embed learning, using client-specific examples and case studies.

Key results

Our simple but impactful training session was well received. Attendees noted that they felt better equipped to discuss these data and understood why it was important and the critical role that utility data played in the overall cost-effectiveness analyses for their products. Having run a successful initial training session and received very positive feedback from the team that attended, it was agreed that this training would be run as part of a continued professional development programme that our client had in place.
